5 of Our Favorite Green Spaces in Downtown Indianapolis

Green spaces make a bustling city like Indianapolis more livable. They give us a place to build community, enjoy nature, and spend time with family, friends, and neighbors. Plus, they just look good. Here are 5 of our favorite local green spaces that you might want to check out for the first time or go visit on a regular basis.

White River State Park: It’s a 250 acre park where you can visit museums, go to the zoo, or take in a game at Victory Field, which has been voted the best Minor League Stadium in America by Sports Illustrated and Baseball America. Plus, it’s like getting 2 attractions in one when you explore the attached Downtown Indy Canal Walk on foot or rent a bike, boat or kayak.

Martin Luther King Park: Share some local history with your kids by taking them to view the Landmark for Peace Memorial. It marks the site where Robert F. Kennedy gave his historic speech in 1968 breaking the news that Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated. The 14 acre park also features a Family Center, swimming pool, and basketball courts.

Monument Circle: Many people consider Monument Circle to be the heart of downtown Indianapolis. It’s home to Circle of Lights, our largest local holiday event, in the winter, and the annual Strawberry Festival in the summer. Attend other fun events year round, or enjoy the view from the observation deck at the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

American Legion Mall: Would you believe that Indianapolis is home to more monuments and memorials than any other city in the U.S., not counting Washington DC? See them for yourself here.

Robert D. Orr Plaza: If you’re working up an appetite, head to Orr Plaza for the lunchtime food trucks and weekly Statehouse Farmers Market. The 2018 season is scheduled to open in mid-May.
