How to Replace the Condenser Fan Blade on a Whirlpool Refrigerator W10156818

Your refrigerator builds up heat just like your air conditioning system. And, just like your HVAC, it needs a condenser fan to pump that excess heat energy away from the appliance. But if the air inside your refrigerator feels a bit warm, the fan blade might be broken. Another common problem with fan blades is that they get noisy as they break down. This is the first step in any appliance repair to keep you and the surrounding area safe. While you won’t be directly manipulating any electrical components, it’s important to disconnect the refrigerator from its power source.

Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and locate the rear access panel at the bottom of the appliance. If the water line is secured across the panel, loosen the screw clipping it in place. Carefully shift it aside without disconnecting it.

Then loosen the screws around the edge of the rear access panel and set the cover aside.

Locate the condenser fan near the center of the appliance. The fan blade is to the left. Firmly pull the part off of the motor shaft and set it aside. As you move it, be careful of the water and refrigerant lines nearby.

Push the new part’s center into position on the motor shaft. Make sure the part’s blades can spin freely.

First, reattach the rear access panel and replace the screws around the edge of the panel. Next, re secure the water line with the loosened screw. Then you can push the refrigerator back against the wall and plug it back in.
